This session will examine the Privacy Rule through the pandemic. Although not eligible for a vaccine, the Privacy Rule has survived. The rule was challenged by a lot of unwarranted attention via EMR access due to fan curiosity. The rule was exploited in a number of ways through email offers promising solutions that didn’t exist. Stay tuned there’s still more! In other news, the 21st Century Cures Act has outlined a process to provide more information for patients to access their health information, and there are changes coming to the Privacy Rule which is now about 25 years old—and it’s about time! 

The presenter will: 
1.    Explain the privacy rule challenges during the pandemic.
2.    Review the potential issues that arose during the pandemic.
3.    Discuss some of the scams that were deployed during the pandemic.
4.    Evaluate the 21st Century Cures Act and its goals.
5.    Describe anticipated changes to the Privacy Rule.
6.    Recall the events of the pandemic and privacy rule survival and evolution.
