Description: 

This session is targeted to anyone looking to learn more about veterinary medicine and to better understand how medical record keeping can aid in the prevention of patient safety events. 

Learning objectives
1.    Develop an understanding of commonly used veterinary abbreviations/acronyms that vary from those used with people. 
2.    Understand key points needed for the documentation of informed consent in the veterinary medical record as well as the legal standing of pets in society. 
3.    Demonstrate the difference between a minimally acceptable veterinary medical record and a high-quality record. 

Bio: 

Dr. Scott Shaw is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He has contributed to more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles. His career has included more than 10 years leading one of the largest veterinary training programs in the country while working on the floor caring for critically ill animals as well as roles in leadership and hospital management. He has served as Regional Medical Director and Director of Patient Safety for VCA Animal Hospitals.
