Title: A Gift for Life: Living-Donor Kidney Transplantation

Presenter: Laurie Sobocinski, RN

Credit: 1 Clinical Medicine

Session Description: This fascinating presentation will take you on the medical journey of a living, non-related kidney donor from the decision to donate through the medical evaluation, procedure, and lifelong impacts. You will hear the story of the recipient, the illness that caused a healthy, vibrant young man to develop renal failure, and the amazing transformation of his life after kidney transplantation. This presentation combines an awe-inspiring story with the medical details of organ donation. You simply don’t want to miss this touching story of courage, generosity, and gratitude.

Bio: Laurie Sobocinski graduated the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1985. She has worked as a nurse since that time, primarily in labor and delivery. Laurie volunteered to donate a kidney to a colleague’s son-in-law in 2010 and has remained friends with her kidney recipient. She enjoys educating people about living organ donation. Laurie is a dyed-in-the-wool Texan but moved to the Pacific Northwest with her husband of 38 years, where she raised her five beautiful children. She recently returned to Texas and enjoys hiking and spending time with her kids and grandkids.
