Session Description: Amyloidosis was once thought of as a rare disease, but in fact, it is significantly underdiagnosed, making it a “commonly uncommon” disease. Early recognition and treatment are critical to improving the outcome of these patients. Because of the challenges in recognizing the pattern of symptoms, there is significant opportunity to use the EHR, documentation, and coding to identify patients at risk for amyloidosis. This session is intended for a broad healthcare audience including documentation, EHR, management, and clinical staff/providers. ​

Learning Objectives
1. Define amyloidosis, types, and incidence/prevalence.
2. Recognize the common signs and symptoms (“red flags”) of amyloidosis.
3. Walk through the steps of diagnosing amyloidosis.
4. Understand the state-of-the-art treatment options.
5. Explore EHR, documentation, and data mining opportunities to improve recognition of amyloidosis.

Bio: Dr. Fermin is a cardiologist at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who specializes in advanced heart failure, with a special interest in amyloidosis and genetic heart diseases in general. He completed medical school and internal medicine residency at University of Minnesota, and cardiology and advanced heart failure fellowships at Mayo Clinic. He has a passion for amyloidosis and has worked with the Amyloidosis Foundation on education for audiences from physicians to patients and the general community.
