Session Description:  Learn about the history of the Canadian health care system and the initialization of Medicare, including the Canadian health care system’s objective, changes the health system went through to create the 1984 Canadian Health Act, who the visionary of a universal healthcare plan was, and where the first health care plan was developed in Canada. Attendees will benefit from understanding the 5 principles (Public Administration, Comprehensiveness, Universality, Accessibility, and Portability) of the Canadian Health Care Act and the 2 conditions (Information and Recognition) that govern the Canadian Health Care System. Attendees will also learn how the Canadian Federal and Provincial governments work to deliver Provincial insurance plans to millions of Canadians.

Bio:  Angelika has been in health care for over 25 years. First educated in nursing from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, in 1993, Angelika successfully passed the Registered Practical Nurse examination in March 1994. Angelika’s frontline nursing career came to an end in 2009 after sustaining injuries in a car crash. Angelika returned to nursing in an administration position for many years until returning to school in 2016 when she enrolled in Health Information Management at CHA Learning/Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. In July of 2019, Angelika was certified with the Canadian Health Information Management Association, and in December 2019, after completing a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist program, she was CHIMA certified as a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist. Angelika began developing curriculum content with CanScribe College in February 2021 in the healthcare faculty and in August 2021 branched into academia with Conestoga College as an instructor in the Health Care Administration and Service Management program.
