Session: Help Your Providers Understand Patient Status Ramifications

Presenter: Cynthia L. Dennis, EdD, MHS, BS, RHIA, CCS, CCDS, CPMA

Description:

Most of us in the healthcare industry understand the various issues surrounding incorrect patient status, but what isn’t widely known is how to help providers understand these complexities. After all, the physician and their admission order become the starting point for a clean claim and full reimbursement for treatment rendered. Unfortunately, most providers are not aware of what happens if the status is incorrect or, more precisely, does not conform to the myriad payer criteria for specific admissions. Learn how Tucson Medical Center is planning to tackle this widespread denial problem for all healthcare facilities.

Learning objectives:
1.    What are the different patient statuses?
2.    Why is the correct status important?
3.    Augment your organization’s EMR build to fill gaps in appropriate placement.
4.    What happens to a claim when the patient status is incorrect?
5.    How can your facility help providers understand the “why” behind appropriate admissions?
