Session Description:
The HIPAA Privacy Rule protects medical records and other individually identifiable health information, collectively known as “protected health information” or PHI. In addition to HIPAA protection, certain healthcare information may require additional layers of protection under state and/or federal law. Sometimes referred to as “sensitive information,” this includes information related to the treatment of substance use disorders, mental health information, AIDS/HIV information information, the treatment of other sexually transmitted diseases, genetic information, reproductive healthcare information, and more. This session will provide an overview of sensitive information, explain common strategies employed to protect its unauthorized disclosure, and describe what is happening in the current regulatory landscape.

Georgia Green is the Director of Health Information Management for the northwest market of a major national health system. She has nearly 40 years in the healthcare field, having begun her career as a healthcare documentation specialist. She holds multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics, a Master of Business Administration, and a Master of Education in Learning and Technology. She is the current chair of AHDI’s Credentialing Commission and the President of the Washington Association for Health Information Management.
