Session Description:

The HIPAA Privacy Rule protects medical records and other individually identifiable health information, collectively known as “protected health information” or PHI. In addition to HIPAA protection, certain healthcare information may require additional layers of protection under state and/or federal law. Sometimes referred to as “sensitive information,” this includes information related to the treatment of substance use disorders, mental health information, AIDS/HIV information information, the treatment of other sexually transmitted diseases, genetic information, reproductive healthcare information, and more. This session will provide an overview of sensitive information, explain common strategies employed to protect its unauthorized disclosure, and describe what is happening in the current regulatory landscape.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define “sensitive information” as it applies to healthcare records.
  2. Cite examples of regulations governing the protection of sensitive information.
  3. Name regulatory bodies responsible for monitoring compliance with laws governing the protection of sensitive information.
  4. Explain the steps taken by a healthcare organization to protect sensitive information.
