Description

Speaker: Erin Flynn, DTCM, MSc, BA

Description: Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are sometimes used to complement the treatments that patients are receiving from their family doctor or specialist. This session will present the basics of Chinese Medicine philosophy and explore some comparisons between biomedical and Chinese Medicine diagnoses. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how Chinese Medicine is used in English-speaking cultures and will hopefully feel a little less mystified about this ancient therapy.

The presenter will:
1.    Compare the foundational philosophies of Chinese versus biomedical medicine.
2.    Discuss core concepts of Chinese Medicine theory, including Meridian Theory and the Materia Medica.
3.    Discuss how Chinese Medicine is used in China (e.g., biomedical hospitals vs. acupuncture hospitals) and how it is used in North America/British Columbia
4.    Compare some examples of Chinese Medicine diagnoses and their biomedical counterparts (including the “language of TCM”).
