Description: We will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation in 2022. We will use relevant guidelines from the most recent ACC/AHA/HRS and the ESC. In this session, we will review the epidemiology and pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation, discuss rate control strategies and anticoagulation, as well as rhythm control strategies and ablation.

Deepak Talreja, MD, a Virginia Beach native, completed his undergraduate education (1993) and medical school at the University of Virginia (1997). He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville (2000) and a Clinical Cardiology Fellowship (2003), as well as an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship (2004) at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is the director of the cardiovascular division and cardiac catheterization laboratory at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and helped start the Structural Heart program at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. He serves on the faculty of Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is also the director of the Sentara Cardiology Lipid Clinic. His special medical interests include transcatheter valve replacement, coronary revascularization, and closure of patent foramen ovale. He has extensive training and expertise in echocardiography, nuclear imaging, valvular heart disease, and preventative cardiology.
