Session Description: This presentation will cover the history of vaccines, the different types of vaccines, and how vaccines work to lessen or prevent disease. We will give special attention to the COVID-19 vaccines and the emergence of mRNA vaccines.

Bios:

Laura earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from the University of Texas at Austin and later earned a master’s in biomedical informatics from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She has worked in all facets of healthcare documentation since 1997 and currently owns a healthcare documentation technology company. Laura spent 10 years working in transplant immunology, hematology, and microbiology at two major medical centers in Dallas and has a particular interest in the immune system. Her volunteer work in the Association has focused on standards development, having recently chaired the task force and authored the Book of Style and Standards for Healthcare Documentation, 4th edition. Laura was elected to the AHDI board of directors in 2021.

Julia has owned and operated her own business since 1992 and has been a medical transcriptionist for 29 years, with experience in nearly every specialty as well as acute care. She has experience with traditional transcription, speech recognition, working within EHRs, and creating record reviews for MedLegal purposes. She manages and trains contracted staff members for her business in performing both traditional medical transcription and medical historian work. She is currently serving AHDI as Chair of the Webinar Education Task Force and Co-Chair of the AHDI Welcoming Committee. Julia has authored articles and presented several webinars for continuing education for AHDI.
