Description

The expansion in access and speed of genetic and genomic testing, coupled with the drastic reduction in cost, is changing healthcare. Diagnoses not previously available are now identified, and the speed of diagnosis is now possible to allow this information to be used in real time for medical management and treatment. This new era of precision medicine comes with challenges around ethics, uncertainty, and scalability. However, the steep trajectory of progress is making this a top priority in health care to prepare for the future that is already a reality in many ways. This session is aimed at a broad audience who is interested in cutting-edge technology and precision medicine. It will briefly review a foundation of genetic concepts to set the stage for exploration of current usage of genetics and genomics in medicine. It will then look to the future at ways this will continue to grow and develop.

Learning Objectives:
1.    Create and solidify knowledge of genetic and genomic testing in medicine.
2.    Understand the experience of integrating such testing into clinical care.
3.    Review and appreciate ‘next level’ efforts in diagnostics and treatment.
4.    Become aware of and engaged in next steps to achieve a future state of true precision medicine.
