Welcome to AHDI's 42nd Annual Conference. We're glad you're here to join us virtually!

The virtual platform provides an interactive experience for participants with live and on-demand educational sessions, discussion forums, live chats with presenters, access to virtual chat, live meet-ups, and so much more. In addition, busy professionals and students will have the convenience and flexibility to access the conference on their own time from anywhere – live as well as on-demand for three (3) months following the event.

Ron is the President of Breakthrough Horizons, LTD, a management consulting company specializing in World Class Improvement through the application of the Toyota Business System, more commonly known as “lean.” With over 33 years of experience in operations, his hands-on lean management experience was gained through multiple enterprise transformations in different industries, including custom packaging, power reliability electronics assembly, and test and measurement products.

Educated at Purdue University, he learned the details and disciplined applications of lean principles, habits, and tools from both the Shingijutsu Sensei and their first-generation disciples. Working in both shop floor and above the shop floor areas, Ron has vigorously strived to remove waste from businesses through the involvement and ideas of the people doing the work. 

Since leaving the industry, Ron has consulting experience in the healthcare sector (US and Canada Health Systems including primary care, acute care, and community applications of both clinical and back shop operations), the commercial sector (administration, manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, and engineering), and the public sector (US Army, US Navy, US Air Force including Depot Repair Operations, the Pentagon, and Surgeon General Assignments). 

Ron is also a recognized author with the release of his Shingo award winning book entitled “Taking Improvement from the Assembly Line to Healthcare” detailing the application of the Toyota Production system to the healthcare industry. His second Shingo award winning book, “Lean Leadership for Healthcare” details the tools, principles and behaviors needed to lead lean quality improvement. And his third book, The Lean Electronic Health Record” provides insights on deploying and then optimizing an Electronic Health Record.

Dr. Cole recently retired after 30 years of active clinical practice as an otolaryngologist/head and neck surgeon. He completed his medical and surgical training at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and North Carolina Baptist Hospital. After completing his military service in the United States Navy, Roger was in private practice otolaryngology for 12 years in Hickory, North Carolina. He joined the Veteran Health Administration in 2009 was selected by the Veterans Administration to complete a Clinical Medical Ethics Fellowship at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago in May of 2011. He completed his Master of Arts degree in Bioethics from Wake Forest University in 2013. He has taught medical ethics to medical students and residents at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, and throughout the Veterans Health Administration.

Mr. Faulkner has enjoyed industry involvement since 1979 in private industry as well as Board participation. He has held senior management positions at Lanier, VDI, Dictaphone, Rodeer, Speech Machines, and was a co-founder at InterFix LLC.  Board participation at AAMT, MTIA, Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial, and several local boards are also part of his life history. He serves now as Economic and Community Development Coordinator for Newaygo, Michigan, a city of about 2000 people, and still plays a mean guitar.

Kathleen “Kat” King, ASHI, AHDI-F, has been in the healthcare documentation industry since 1974, owned a medical transcription service for 20 years, and managed teams in 8 countries. She earned a degree in Healthcare Informatics, pursued a degree in Healthcare Management Administration, and is working to earn her Medical Coding/Billing credential. Ms King has provided EHR implementation training in health systems throughout the Pacific Northwest. She is the director of Customer Success for Cybexys, Inc., a technology company providing a coding validation solution for risk adjustment and revenue cycle management, utilizing artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and machine learning.

She has served on numerous AHDI alliances, component boards, was co-founder and President of AHDI-West, and currently serves as Secretary on the AHDI Board of Directors. She has received multiple nominations and awards within AHDI and AHDI-West, including Distinguished Service Award, Advocate of the Year, Member of the Year twice, and Membership Impact Award eight times.

Susan Marks, MSN, FNP-C, PHN, is a family nurse practitioner specializing in cannabis therapeutics. Her company, Nurse Susan, is a medical cannabis education and consulting practice. Nurse Susan is a member of the American Cannabis Nurses Association and the Society of Cannabis Clinicians. She works with medical patients in all 50 states who want to include cannabis therapeutics in their health management program. 

Nurse Susan is passionate about the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. She is a medical cannabis patient due to a progressive neurological movement disorder, and cannabis (high CBD, low THC) has allowed her to wean off anti-seizure medication and the intolerable side effects. Nurse Susan is incredibly grateful for this plant, and she enjoys working with other patients who can benefit from cannabis therapy.

Karen received her massage license in September 2012 and is a full-time massage therapist for Asante Hospice. She also has been a part-time massage therapy instructor at Rogue Community College for the past four years. Five years ago she opened Essential Wellness Bodywork & Massage, LLC, in Grants Pass, Oregon, which has grown to a team of seven therapists. Karen has been a part of many teaching events.

CEC Policy

The 2020 Healthcare Documentation Integrity Virtual Conference (HDIVC20) has been approved for 12 CECs for the 4-day conference.  You will receive a certificate for each credit-worthy session once you have viewed 85% or more, whether live or on-demand after the conference.  If you are unable to attend the live sessions, the recordings will be available for 3 months following the conference.

AHDI Virtual Conference FAQs

Q.  When is the virtual conference?
A.  The virtual conference will be held over 4 days, August 12-15, 2020. See schedule details here!

Q.  What will the price be for the virtual conference?
A.  See pricing information here.

Q.  Can I register for a single day or single session?
A.  Single days or single sessions are not available a la carte; however, your full registration gives you access to all sessions during the live event on August 12-15, 2020, as well as on-demand access for 3 months immediately following.


Q.  How do I attend a virtual conference?
A.  Enjoy the conference from any computer (PC or Mac), tablet, or smartphone using a link provided by AHDI. Click here for more information on minimum specs needed to view. We recommend the latest version of Google Chrome as your internet browser.


Q.  Will I need a webcam to participate?
A.  A webcam is not required for attendees. You will be able to see our speakers and presenters who will be using webcams.

Q.  What if I can’t make one of the live sessions?
A.  All sessions will be recorded and available to you for 3 months immediately following the event to view on-demand.

Q.  What if I have technical difficulty?
A.  Please see our technical FAQs here.  Live phone and email help desk support will be available throughout the conference in case you run into any technical issues.

Q.  How many continuing education credits will be available?
A.  We currently anticipate a total of 12 CECs.  Certificates will be available to print upon completion of each session.

Q.  How long is each session?
A.  Each session will last approximately 60 minutes.  Check out the Schedule at a Glance and Speaker Bios – both are being updated frequently!

Q.  Will I be able to ask the speakers and presenters questions?
A.  Absolutely!  During the live event, you will be able to post questions and/or comments to the speakers, presenters and attendees who have joined the session. Everyone joining live will be able to view and interact. This feature will not be available on the recording if viewing on-demand so do your best to join us live!

Q.  Will I be able to meet and interact with other attendees during the virtual conference?
A.  Absolutely!  Once registered, you’ll be able to communicate via the conference forum as well as via chat within each session. You will also see and meet new people during the social activities scheduled at the end of each day.

Q. What are the social activities?
A. The social activities are live events held at the end of each day. Details for each are being finalized and we will make announcements along the way. You won’t want to miss them as they will include fun activities and prizes!

Q.  Can I participate with a group of friends?
A.  You are welcome to view the conference with a group, but we ask that each participant have their own registration. A participant of the group may contact AHDI with an attendance list for the CECs to be marked on the individual accounts.

Q.  I’m afraid I’ll miss the fun of not being face-to-face. What can I expect?
A.  We will still be coming to you live for our Integrity Awards Ceremony, AHDI leadership updates, and scheduled social activities!  We’re re-inventing fun!

Q.  Will there be sponsors and exhibitors participating in the virtual conference?
A.  Yes, we couldn’t make this possible without the support of our sponsors who are displayed before, during and after the event. You will also find our exhibitors on our website and on the Virtual Exhibitors tab within the platform. You will hear from them in-between sessions, with an option to connect with them further if you wish.
