Description
HIPAA has been the “law of the land” since 1996, but often it is not well understood. This presentation will outline specific requirements for release of information, the changes in release of information requirements with the advent of telehealth, as well as related effects due to COVID-19. We will also discuss some of the constraints that healthcare providers may feel in clearly documenting patient issues in the medical record knowing that the patient can see what the provider wrote.
Learning Objectives
1. Understand who may access the patient record.
2. Understand the consequences for unauthorized release of medical information.
3. Understand which records are protected by the Privacy Rule.
4. Understand what information can be requested from a healthcare provider by an employer.
