Welcome to AHDI's 43rd Annual Conference. We're glad you're here to join us virtually!

The virtual platform provides an interactive experience for participants with live and on-demand educational sessions, discussion forums, live chats with presenters, access to virtual chat, live meet-ups, and so much more. In addition, busy professionals and students will have the convenience and flexibility to access the conference on their own time from anywhere – live as well as on-demand for three (3) months following the event.

This is her 15th year counseling in the high school setting, and she has helped thousands of students through challenging life trials to become healthy and successful young adults. She earned her B.A. in Communications & Psychology from California State University, Fullerton, and her M.A. in Educational Counseling at Azusa Pacific University. She is passionate about helping teenagers find their voice and purpose and encouraging them to have fun experiences along the way.

Caleb Bupp, MD, FACMG, is pediatrics-trained, board-certified medical geneticist practicing with Spectrum Health West Michigan and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He serves as the Division Chief of Medical Genetics and Genomics. He is also an assistant professor at Michigan State University, where he was named a Pediatric Master Series Teacher. He is the chairperson of the Genomics Committee at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and the Spectrum Health Institutional Biosafety Committee, as well as serving on the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Research Advisory Council. He is the chair of the State of Michigan’s Newborn Screen Quality Assurance Advisory Committee and a member of the Make-A-Wish Medical Advisory Council for the State of Michigan. 

Dr. Bupp received his bachelor of science in molecular biology from Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in Ohio. He completed a pediatrics residency at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and his medical genetics training at the Greenwood Genetic Center in South Carolina.
His clinical interests include intellectual disability, genetics education, and rare syndromes. He has authored multiple journal articles and textbook chapters in the field of genetics. Recently, he helped describe a new treatable genetic syndrome caused by ODC1 mutations now termed Bachmann-Bupp syndrome. He has been an invited speaker for many conferences and events locally and nationally.

She enjoys working with students to help them recognize their potential and make tangible plans for the future. Susan authored AHDI’s HIPAA Compliance Guide & Quick Reference (2017) and contributed to AHIMA’s Breach Management Toolkit (2018). Her experience leading healthcare initiatives in privacy and security has spanned over 15 years. Prior to that, Susan has 15 years’ experience in acute care and behavioral health hospital Health Information Management (HIM) departments. She has been a school counselor for 8 years, starting off her career as a mobile therapist and elementary school counselor in Central Bucks School District in Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Rider University. She is a certified and credentialed school counselor in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. Dr. Kevin Nelson is a neuromuscular neurologist in Lexington, Kentucky, and is affiliated with University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, and is board certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and Neuromuscular Medicine. He spends a lot of his time teaching residents how to perform and interpret nerve conduction studies and EMG. He is a noted expert on therapeutic botulinum toxin injection. Dr. Nelson is also very active in hospital administration. Currently, his research is centered on the expressions of REM consciousness. He has authored many articles and books, including “The Spiritual Doorway in the Brain: A Neurologist's Search for the God Experience.”

Lea is the Marketing Strategy Lead for Verizon’s Healthcare, Insurance and Life Sciences (HILS) practice, overseeing healthcare messaging, marketing and thought leadership in support of Verizon’s enterprise business group. She has spent ten years at Verizon as a healthcare industry subject matter expert, strategist, and content developer. Lea works with Verizon’s healthcare practice principals, sales leaders, product development teams, and solution architects to advance Verizon’s connected solutions value to enterprise customers and partners. She also oversees the company’s strategic alliances with HIMSS, American Telemedicine Association, Advisory Board and other healthcare industry influencer organizations.

From 2002-2011, Lea was Director of Professional Practices for the Association for Healthcare Documentation (AHDI), overseeing practitioner certification, continuing education, legislative advocacy, and marketing strategy for the association's 20,000+ global professional members. She was Editor-in-Chief of the association’s two clinical/technical journals and authored the Book of Style for Medical Transcription, 3rd edition, the standards manual used by clinical documentation specialists globally. She has been a credentialed documentation specialist since 1995 and spent the first ten years of her career in acute care clinical documentation as owner/operator of AccuTranz Medical Transcription Svcs. She also taught anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and medicolegal fundamentals as an allied health professor for Florida State College at Jacksonville. Lea lives in Green Cove Springs, Florida, with her firefighter/paramedic husband and three kids.

Deepak Talreja, MD, a Virginia Beach native, completed his undergraduate education (1993) and medical school at the University of Virginia (1997). He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville (2000) and a Clinical Cardiology Fellowship (2003), as well as an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship (2004) at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is the director of the cardiovascular division and cardiac catheterization laboratory at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and helped start the Structural Heart program at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. He serves on the faculty of Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is also the director of the Sentara Cardiology Lipid Clinic. His special medical interests include transcatheter valve replacement, coronary revascularization, and closure of patent foramen ovale. He has extensive training and expertise in echocardiography, nuclear imaging, valvular heart disease, and preventative cardiology.

Learning the ropes in acute care documentation management, Meridith was able to grow a foundational knowledge base of production methods and platform technologies and then apply these to the medicolegal world. The 2021 Healthcare Documentation Integrity Virtual Conference (HDIVC21) has been approved for 12.5 CECs for the 4-day conference.  You will receive a certificate for each credit-worthy session once you have viewed 85% or more, whether live or on-demand after the conference.  If you are unable to attend the live sessions, the recordings will be available for 3 months following the conference.

Q.  When is the virtual conference?
A.  The virtual conference will be held over 4 days, August 4-7, 2021. See schedule details here!

Q.  Can I register for a single day or single session?
A.  Single days or single sessions are not available a la carte; however, your full registration gives you access to all sessions during the live event on August 4-7, 2021, as well as on-demand access for 3 months immediately following.


Q.  How do I attend a virtual conference?
A.  Enjoy the conference from any computer (PC or Mac), tablet, or smartphone using a link provided by AHDI. Click here for more information on minimum specs needed to view. We recommend the latest version of Google Chrome as your internet browser.


Q.  Will I need a webcam to participate?
A.  A webcam is not required for attendees. You will be able to see our speakers and presenters who will be using webcams.

Q.  What if I can’t make one of the live sessions?
A.  All sessions will be recorded and available to you for 3 months immediately following the event to view on-demand.

Q.  What if I have technical difficulty?
A.  Please see our technical FAQs here.  Live phone and email help desk support will be available throughout the conference in case you run into any technical issues.

Q.  How many continuing education credits will be available?
A.  We currently anticipate a total of 12.5 CECs.  Certificates will be available to print upon completion of each session.

Q.  How long is each session?
A.  Each session will last approximately 60 minutes.  Check out the Schedule at a Glance and Speaker Bios – both are being updated frequently!

Q.  Will I be able to ask the speakers and presenters questions?
A.  Absolutely!  During the live event, you will be able to post questions and/or comments to the speakers, presenters and attendees who have joined the session. Everyone joining live will be able to view and interact. This feature will not be available on the recording if viewing on-demand so do your best to join us live!

Q.  Will I be able to meet and interact with other attendees during the virtual conference?
A.  Absolutely!  Once registered, you’ll be able to communicate via the conference forum as well as via chat within each session at the designated social time. You will also see and meet new people during the social activities scheduled at the end of each day and meet with the exhibitors. 

Q. What are the social activities?
A. The social activities are live events held at the end of each day. Details for each are being finalized and we will make announcements along the way. You won’t want to miss them as they will include fun activities and prizes!

Q.  Can I participate with a group of friends?
A.  You are welcome to view the conference with a group, but we ask that each participant have their own registration. A participant of the group may contact AHDI with an attendance list for the CECs to be marked on the individual accounts.

Q.  I’m afraid I’ll miss the fun of not being face-to-face. What can I expect?
A.  We will still be coming to you live for our Integrity Awards Ceremony, AHDI leadership updates, and scheduled social activities!  We’re re-inventing fun!

Q.  Will there be sponsors and exhibitors participating in the virtual conference?
A.  Yes, we couldn’t make this possible without the support of our sponsors who are displayed before, during and after the event. You will also find our exhibitors on our website and on the Virtual Exhibitors tab within the platform. You will hear from them in-between sessions, with an option to connect with them further if you wish.
